Swedish Gustavian painted tile top centre table carved and painted in the neoclassical manner of the 18th century. Tile top tables were a hobby for the prosperous and became a cultural expresion. The tiles in the 18th and 19th century usually had an ornate painted pattern which matched the tiles covering the columnar heater or kackelofen. Because these tiles where glazed they became a useful surface for a centre table as they resisted heat and spills.
This table is very well carved in the traditional Swedish Gustavian manner and painted in distressed grey finish.
