Superb quality solid cast iron torchere pedestal stand in ornate neoclassical designed for candelabra circa 1880's.
The platter shaped top with cast neoclassical design over a tapering fluted column supported by three egrets joined by Roman turned centre. Each has a brass chain held by their beaks. The legs termionate with padded feet and are joined by an anthenium scroll cast centre stretcher.
This tall antique pedestal design would have been influenced by the excavations from Pompeii and is of Ancient Roman design. Its purpose is to hold aloft a candelabra or torch, hence torchere.
