This charming pen & ink portrait of Australian artist Elaine Haxton in New York was drawn in 1947 when she shared a studio with fellow painter Margaret Cilento. She was an important member of the circle of Sydney painters including William Dobell, Russell Drysdale & Donald Friend. Haxton left for New York in 1945, arriving on Christmas Eve and was taken to Peggy Guggenheim’s famous Christmas party by Edgar Kauffman, staying at Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water. Cilento was studying with Rufino Tamayo at the Brooklyn Museum Art School & William Hayter's famous Atelier 17 studio. More in link:
