Painted in Old Ivory with a delightfully worn patina, this Rococo chair is mortise and tenon and pegged construction: about the most robust joinery possible. It is an inheritance from Ancient Egypt. The frame is tight and sturdy. Carved marguerites decorate the crets, knees, and front seat rail. The fauteuil (open armchair)en cabriole (concave back) is elegant and robust. It could do with recovering, but the current upholstery is sound. The back is upholstered inback, with an external vertical support. Made in Paris about the same time Captain Cook was in Australia.
