Antique provincial fireside chair cockfighting chair in walnut stained fruitwood with woven seagrass seat original patina and polished all round.
Georgian chairs such as these allowed the resting of books etc on the flat top rain of the back. It also allowed for resting elbows and hence this type of chair to be used at the fireside so that the person behind the sitter was also able to get some warmth.
Sometimes these are also known as cockfighting chairs as portrayed in oil paintings of the sport as it allowed the sitter to rest his wager book on the backrest whilst watching the spectacle.
