The rare use of the pencil may have been in anticipation of a future copper plate engraving . The lady pictured has the countenance of a classic Roman beauty and resembles the sister of Napoleon, Pauline Borghese Bonaparte (1780-1825). She was the only sibling of Napoleon to visit him in exile at Elba. Simply signed in pencil lower right with initials.
